I have several secret projects I’m working on, but I can share my progress on the Irish rose motifs.
I am still not exactly sure what these roses will be transformed into, but I know the project will ultimately be something for me. I haven’t been reading as much this week, so I’m only halfway through The City and the Stars and the Sands of Mars by Arthur C. Clarke. I think I may be coming close to the end of the The City and the Stars and I’m not sure if I’ll continue with the Sands of Mars right away. I was gifted some Kindle books for my birthday and I may read one of those next.
And, for the first time in about 18 months, I got a hair cut on Monday. This is the first time my hair has been this short in about 10 years. Ok, short for me – it is actually a little past my shoulders. I have a mild fear of hair cuts, but this had to be done.
Backstory: About 3-1/2 years ago, I caved in and let my mother and sister convince me that I should dye my hair since I’m prematurely grey. I never kept it up and would go to get it dyed about every six months. About 18 months ago, I went and had my last dye and hair cut appointment. As it grew longer and longer, I ended up with half of my hair being natural and the other half being dyed. It looked so ridiculous, and I haven’t been able to wear my hair down in about a year. I had to decide if I was going to dye it again or just remove as much of the dyed hair as possible.
This piece is about 12 inches (30 cm) long. Just one step in what will be a year of many changes. And with that, I’ll leave you with one of my favorite David Bowie songs.

The roses look lovely
I decided to stop dyeing my hair a while ago (I had dyed it bright red, which faded so quickly that I got sick of the upkeep!) and found a product in the hair dye aisle that strips colour out. Pretty nifty

I love the irish rose. Congrats on your big hair change! Are you donating it?

Last year I stopped changing my hair colour I have been doing it for 20 years. I have embraced my grey. The amount of comments I get about it is amazing. People want to know who my hairdresser is so they can get the same highlights until I point out it’s natural!!
I can’t see myself doing it again. I love my grey and I can’t get the hours I sat in the hairdresser back or the money spent on all the different colours I did.
Love the roses as well and Hip Hip Hooray for a join as you go motif

Yay, RugbyMad, I’m glad to know we are in the same club. I am so glad to save the money too!

Thanks erin! I’m not sure yet, since so far most of the places I’ve looked at don’t accept hair that is dyed OR require the shortest bit of hair to be longer than what I have. But I will keep looking at places for donation.

Thanks, Nat! The upkeep is way more than I can maintain (in terms of time and money).

I go back and forth on whether I should cover my gray. Right now I am decidedly in favor of letting it stay natural because of the very same thing you are talking about. Sounds like you have had a nice, fresh start!

Welcome Rebecca! For me, the maintenance isn’t worth it. Honestly, I would have never even considered dyeing if my mother and sister weren’t talking about it all the time

I admire you for doing what you want. I donate my hair to charity when it gets long enough, so I don’t put chemicals on it, trying to keep it in as good condition as possible. This may be my last time, too much gray (actually, silver) coming in now, so I sympathize so much with how it feels when the shears go whacking…

Change is good … and I bet you feel so liberated having short hair.

The Irish rose motif is so pretty. I love how the petals are layered on top of each other. I think this would make a lovely cushion cover. Just keep on crocheting layer after layer.
Wow, your hair must have been long! Like you, I try to minimize visits to the hair salon as much as possible, mainly by putting my hair up into a pony tail. It is nice to change hairstyles every once in a while, though. Great choice of Bowie songs!

Are you donating the locks?

Congratulations on the daring haircut! I say, wear your true color and be proud. And what a good way to begin a new year.
The roses are lovely. Maybe a scarf of them?

Welcome, Lise, and thanks! I was definitely thinking something neck related, but haven’t decided on the shape yet.

Welcome fanya. So far, I haven’t found a place where I can donate them
– some places don’t accept dyed hair and some places need it to be longer. I hadn’t really thought of that at the time or I might have cut it a little shorter.

Thanks autumngeisha! I love the layered effect, too. (My hair was down to my butt, by the way!)

I’m still a bit nervous, Evelyn! I haven’t totally adapted yet. But I do like having the freedom to wear it up or down.

Wow, that is great Snowcatcher. I realize I probably should have thought this through a bit more in terms of donating my hair, but I needed to get it cut while I was still brave enough to do it!

Love the crochet, but, go you with your hair. My hair isn’t grey (and I actually think prematurely grey hair is beautiful) but I used to highlight it and yes, I couldn’t take the upkeep AT ALL, also it made my hair feel dry and horrible. And yes, the cost – £100 for a dye job here. So it’s my natural colour all the way.
Although… I have been thinking of going peroxide blonde this year just as a thrilling one-off, then getting it cut really short (I suit short hair).
Sorry, I wrote you an essay!

The roses are gorgeous! I look forward to seeing what you do with them.
I stopped coloring my hair a couple of years ago. I’ve let it grow out and went through the stripe stage. It is so freeing not to have to worry about getting it dyed. I bet you’ll love yours.

They roses are very pretty! Wow, that was quite a haircut! Good for you. I started getting grey hairs in my 20s and dyed it at first too. In my 30s I decided just to go with it. I bet you will get many compliments.

Thanks Affiknitty! I started getting grey hairs when I was 17, but until I was about 26 there were just two solid streaks (on on each side) so it kind of looked like a I planned it. After that, the greys developed a mind of their own…

It is freeing, Karen! I am so happy not to stress it anymore.

Wow Susie, that is crazy expensive (and here I was, thinking NYC dye jobs were costly). I think peroxide blonde could be fun for a bit!
